A brief History of Cannabis

Early Historycannabis-history

The first ever documented use of cannabis was in China around 2700 BC, used primarily as a medicine to treat a variety of ailments. It isn’t until 1200 BC that we find the first records of cannabis being used as a narcotic; sacred Hindu texts describe marijuana as being one of the sacred grasses used during the offerings to Shiva. Still firmly in the BC period, we find the Persian prophet Zoroaster placing marijuana at the top of his list of over 10,000 medicinal plants. Around 500 BC cannabis was finally introduced to Europe by the Scythians to be used as medication, also in 430 BC we find the famous Greek Historian Herodotus discussing his observations of cannabis being used recreationally by the Scythians.

After Christ

Moving forward into the time following the death of Christ, we find marijuana in widespread use throughout Rome, as both a medicine and for recreational purposes. One particular Roman text describes cannabis being given to guests to “promote hilarity and enjoyment”.

By 1100 AD, marijuana is in widespread use through the Middle Easy and other Muslim nations, and usage continues to gain popularity until Ottoman Emir Soudoun Scheikhouni issues and edict which outlaws the eating of marijuana.

cannabis-history-2The Middle Ages

Sometime during the middle part of the 13th century, European farmers and industrialists discover the great possibilities for using marijuana seeds, fibre and oil for manufacturing purposes, culminating in Queen Elizabeth ordering every landowner with more than 60 acres to grow a parcel of marijuana to further the trade endeavours of the nation.

By the 16th century, cannabis is the major trade item to be moved between Asia and the Middle East, for almost 200 years the marijuana trade flourishes, seeing the plant being used for both its medicinal value and for purely pleasurable purposes. Finally, in 1798, whilst visiting Egypt, Napoleon is stunned by the widespread use of cannabis and outlaws it entirely within the boundaries of his far reaching empire.

Modern Age

Since this broad ruling by Napoleon, the situation has changed very little; marijuana is still a popular recreational drug, although outlawed in almost every nation around the globe. It has been almost 400 years since cannabis use was broadly accepted around the globe and this situation seems to be set to continue into the future, despite the documented benefits of marijuana.

Nutritional Benefits of Hemp Seeds

hemp-nutrition-1

Background of Hemp Seeds as Nutrition

It is incredible to think that the world has almost completely dismissed hemp as a food source globally. Marijuana seeds are in fact very high in nutritional value, and have been consumed by humans and animals alike for centuries, it only seems to be recent decades which have seen marijuana or cannabis seeds decline as a popular food. China for instance, has seen its entire population sustained on marijuana seeds as its staple diet during times of famine, and when you go to visit the cinema, you can still buy roasted cannabis seeds just like we can buy popcorn in the western world.

Nutritional Properties of Hemp Seeds

Marijuana seeds have three particularly valuable nutritional properties. Firstly they are crammed full of amino acids, with a very high protein value. Secondly, cannabis seeds contain massive amounts of trace elements and minerals, and lastly, they contain an ideal balance of Omega six and Omega three.

People with a low intake of fatty acids will also benefit by consuming marijuana seeds, great for athletes or other people who work in professions which burn body fat fast. Additionally, cannabis seeds make a perfect part of a vegetarian of vegan diet, offering almost meat like protein and fat content, in a suitably vegetarian package.

Other Benefits of Hemp Oils

More benefits of consuming marijuana seeds include the anti-ageing effect that the natural oils have upon the skin and hair, along with the nourishment provided to both hair follicles and skin regeneration cells. Studies have proven that Hemp Oil used as Skincare has better anti-ageing effects than 80% of the Commercial Products around.

Let us not forget that marijuana seeds grow naturally, with no additional fertiliser or pesticides required to maintain a healthy crop, in many ways they are the original organic product, the bread of the masses, one can only speculate as to why they have begun to decline as a staple food source over the last century.

To sum it all up, cannabis seeds contain essential acids, fats and protein, along with significant levels of minerals, which when consumed can provide almost everything a person needs for a healthy and nutritional diet.

Pothead Vocabulary

Vocabulary Lesson for New Pot Smokers

Society would likely be a lot better if there were more marijuana users running around (or lounging as the case may be). It should be a prerequisite for politicos. Imagine a world where everyone simply calmed down. (Yes…I have been to Jamaica)

Pot is a natural calm enhancer. No one has ever robbed a convenience store while zoned out on pot. Even the store right next door is simply “tooooo farrrrrr mannnnn”. Other than driving exceedingly slow, the worst damage a pot smoker ever does to the world around them takes place in their own homes when raiding the cabinet for Nabisco products (Potheads know that Nabisco makes the world’s best munchies). Nabisco would do well to sponsor lobbyists to push for the unconditional legalization of marijuana. I digress; this article is for the purpose of discussing pothead vocabulary.

420-4-20

The Term 420

Marijuana is known by many names. While for some, the term “marijuana” would do, cops, lawyers, newbies,

scientists, the language of the near-religion of pot worship is far more fun.

Older names like Dope and Mary Jane have given way to more colorful names, for example, “Party Favors” or more recently “4:20”. Pinpointing the exact origin of the term 4:20 is difficult, but the term has come to signify all things pot. Craig’s list has a roommate section teeming with ads for “4:20 friendly households”, signifying that cannabis consumption on the premises is accepted, and even encouraged.

One of the commonly held theories regarding the origins of the term “4:20” is that in the early 1970s, a group of teenagers at San Raphael High School in California met every day after school at 4:20 p.m. for the express purpose of smoking pot at a statue of Louis Pasteur. Supporting the idea that “4:20” originated with a time of day, is the fact that the number is always said "four twenty". This is the most often cited theory, and among pot afficianados, the most widely believed.

Of course, the term “pot” will work until the end of time. Everyone in the English speaking world understands. Today’s true cannabis connoisseurs know that “4:20” says it all. As an homage, every day at 4:20 p.m. (and for true diehards, a.m.) cannabis worshippers skin up, light up and worship at their hazy altar.

Skinning up

For those unfamiliar with the term “skinning up”, it is the verb used by pot smokers to explain the action of rolling a joint.

The ‘skin” is typically a tiny paper used to roll the joint. Zig Zag is the most famous brand of rolling papers. The company, which also now produces flavored versions of it’s famous wrappers, has made a fortune from people who burn their product and come looking for more. Some of the most popular ways of “skinning up” are as follows:

knee-trembler-joint

Knee Trembler:Are ya hurried? This is a timeless, easy roll which enables you to slow your world down fast.

nose-cone-joint

Nose Cone: This roll is for the more advanced roller. As to the smoking part, this big “fattie” is guaranteed to slow you down and seriously enhance your mellow.

saturday-night-special-joint

Saturday Night Special: If you, like me, have huge ape-like hands or clumsy fingers, then the Saturday Night Special is your roll.

Of course, those aren't just three types of rolls. Truthfully, the creativity among joint (or “blunt”) rollers is endless. For a larger list, I recommend you let Google be your guide. There are thousands of online tutorials anxious to teach you how to roll.

As you think through the terms found in this article, remember: It’s 4:20 in at least two time zones once each hour, and one extra time per day in Newfoundland Canada. Newfies have their own time zone. If you have the urge to light up, pay no attention to the big hand on your clock. Watch that little hand and of course, grab some premium bud and skin up! It’s nearly 4:20 somewhere!
